画集Walking and Drawing 1「はじめに」より

出 発 点 を 考 え て み る と 、大 学 時 代 に 逆 の ぼ る 。入 学 す る と 何 故 か「 ワ ン ダ ー フ ォ ー ゲ ル 部 」に 魅 か れ 入 部 し た 。

部員たちの主流は「山登り」であったが、私は谷間や田園地域にある小さな村や町を訪ね歩く「里歩き」に魅かれていた。 大 学 の 専 門 を 「 都 市 計 画 」 に し た こ と も あ り 、「 里 歩 き 」 に 「 街 歩 き 」 が 加 わ っ て い っ た 。

卒 業 後 、 都 市 計 画 コ ン サ ル タ ン ト 会 社 に て 各 種 の 計 画 立 案 業 務 に 従 事 し た 。「 街 歩 き 」 は 続 い た が 、 あ く ま で 立 案 の た め の「 調 査 業 務 」と し て の 街 歩 き で あ り 、な か な か 自 分 の 興 味 関 心 の ま ま 歩 く こ と は 時 間 的 に 無 理 だ っ た 。

そ の 後 独 立 し ま ち づ く り コ ン サ ル タ ン ト を 自 営 す る こ と と な り 、出 張 先 で 絵 に な る 風 景 に 出 会 っ た こ と も 何 度 と な く あ る が、持ち歩いていたスケッチブックを取出し描くこともなく、出張先から白紙のまま持ち帰っていた。

月 日 は 流 れ 6 0 才 を 過 ぎ て“ あ る 衝 撃 的 事 故(「 お わ り に 」詳 述 )”を 目 の 当 た り に 経 験 し 、そ の 後 急 に 何 と し て も 街 の 風 景を描きたいという願望が湧いてきた。さりとて描く時間はない。 ・・

そ こ で 過 去 の 挫 折 体 験 も 踏 ま え て 、あ き ら め る こ と な く 描 き 続 け る 方 法 を 考 え た 。

それは、軽くてコンパクトな道具(水彩色鉛筆、ボールペン、水入り筆ペン)、そして小さなスケッチブック ( 1 0 c m x l 5 c m )を リ ュ ッ ク サ ッ ク に 入 れ 、そ の リ ュ ッ ク を い つ で も ど こ で も 持 参 す る ス タ イ ル だ 。

仕 事 や 余 暇 の あ ら ゆ る 隙 間 時 間 を 使 い な が ら 描 き ま く っ た 結 果 、2 0 1 1 年 か ら 今 日 ま で に 描 い た ス ケ ッ チ 数 は 、い つ の 間 にか8,000枚を超えていた。(続く)

Prologue

“Walking around a city”has been my hobby for quite some time in my life.

It started back in my college life. I joined a mountain trekking club soon after I entered college. While the club’s main activity was climbing the mountain, I somehow got attracted to walking around a town, visiting small towns and villages in rural areas. As I majored in city planning, it was not long before I started to explore cities as well as towns.

Upon graduation, I worked for a city planning consulting company where I got involved in various types of planning. I continued to“walk around a city”but it was just as research work for my job and not necessarily out of my personal interest given that I just did not have enough free time. Afterwards, I left the company to do an independent city planning consulting myself. Throughout the period, I encountered a number of picturesque landscapes but I never took out a sketchbook from my bag, leaving the city with the sketchbook blank.

Time went by and it was after I became 60 years old when I experienced a shocking incident (to be mentioned in Epilogue) which for the first time motivated myself so much to draw the city landscape. But I had not so much time as my strong motivation. Based on my past failed experiences, I came up with a“method”to be able to keep drawing and never give up.

That is, I always made sure to bring my bag with light compact tools (eg. water colored pencils, ball pens, and water-filled calligraphy pens) and a small sketchbook (10x15cm). I used every possible spare time during business and leisure and drew a great number of sketches. Before I knew it, I made over 8,000 sketches since 2011 to date. (Continue)
