市を代表する観光資源として蘇った八幡堀　Hachimanbori, revived as a representative tourist spot in the city

数 百 年 前 に 水 運 路 と し て つ く ら れ た 八 幡 掘 は 、数 十 年 前 に は ヘ ドロの堆積や蚊・ハエの発生源と化していた。 悪臭被害により埋め立てられることとなったが、地元の若者が 保存活動に立ち上がり、埋め立てを免れた。 小舟に乗って白壁の土蔵や伝統的民家、ミュージアム、花菖蒲な ど の 情 緒 あ る 風 景 を 楽 し め る こ と は 、市 を た び た び 訪 問 す る 私 のこの上ない魅力となっている。

Hachimanbori, created as a water transportation path hundreds years ago, was full of sludge and had become a source of mosquitos and flies decades ago. It was almost decided to be reclaimed due to the stench, but young people in the city fought against it and held back the reclamation. It is a pleasure to visit the city sometimes to enjoy on a small boat the landscape of white-wall warehouses, traditional houses, museum, and iris.
