広場がある街　A city with a square

西欧の街へ行くと至るところに広場がある。そこでは暮らしに必要な市場が開かれていたり、数人の仲間がグループで演奏 を楽しんでいたり、面するオープンカフェで思い思いに人々がお茶をしていたりする。

たいてい西欧の街の中心には、広場を持つ教会や寺院がある。広場から石畳を歩いていくと、また広場に出るという具合に、 道と広場がネットワークされている。建物で狭くなった視界は、広場によって視界が大きく広げられる。

日本にはなじみの少ない“広場”というものが、なぜ西欧の街に生まれたのか、王宮前広場のように時の権力者によって人々 を集めるためにつくられたのか、人々が自由に集まるためにつくったのか、その成立過程は大変興味があるテーマである。

A square is everywhere in Western Europe. It is the place for Farmer’s market that supports the people’s living, where a group of people enjoy playing music, and for those taking it easy over coffee in their own way.

In Western Europe, most cities have a church or temple with a square in its center. Roads and squares are interlinked ‒ walking on stone-paved roads from a square leading to another square. The narrow visibility surrounded by buildings gets broadened going into a square.

How these squares, something less familiar among Japanese, have come into existence in Western Europe ‒ whether it was because of those in power needing some space to gather people or ordinary people making it to assemble ‒ it is an interesting topic to explore.
